And why do clients love...

Why are rotating (slider, sort of) background images always such a mess? And why do clients love them so much? And finally, how hard could it be to understand that one image will not suit all devices and screen sizes?

And even if it does, it’s probably scaled or cropped. If it’s cropped then probably in the wrong place, cutting off some important part of the image on the client’s 11-inch Macbook Air. If it’s scaled then the aspect ratio can’t fit 16:9, 16:10 and 4:3 all at the same time.

But then again, clients would love to resize their browsers, right? They’d like to see how it’ll look on other screens and that messes it up even worse! So what do we say, wrong image composition? Too many browsers? Why serve a 1080p image on an 11” screen? Why do wallpaper websites let you download their images for 10 different resolutions?

Here’s as close as it can get: Awesome, Easy, Progressive CSS3 Way then again try explaining why when scaling, the image is still being cropped ;)

So the question is: why bother?

Finished reading Tackling Tumblr by Thord Daniel Hedengren, a...

Finished reading Tackling Tumblr by Thord Daniel Hedengren, a very nice book indeed. I’m not a total newcomer to Tumblr so I scanned through around half of the book but I really, really dig his writing style so staying tuned to what Thord’s got next!

Oh and waiting for the next edition of the Smashing WordPress Themes too ;)

"Just throw some fucking flowers or something in there"

““Just throw some fucking flowers or something in there””

- The head of sales, contacting me to design a flashbanner for a botanical garden. Slight color modifications, done with custom CSS and the magical “Inspect” feature in Google Chrome.

Here’s an addition to Tumblr though, what’s the difference between “publish now” and “publish on”? I love the “publish on” feature and I guess it works with “now” too, so why are there two? I’d also love if I could publish “in 5 minutes from now” and I also think this could be a great addition to WordPress.

However, I’ll queue the post this time, let’s see where it ends up ;)

Did you know that having caps lock “On” on a Mac you don’t get lowercase letters...

Did you know that having caps lock “On” on a Mac you don’t get lowercase letters while holding down the shift key? Until now I mostly used Tumblr to publish links and most of them were to my own content so that’s kinda sad I know, but I’ll try and do better this time.

I like Google’s 404 page. Looks cool to me. I like the hover effect, I like the fact that they show you which section you’re on with a blue border on top (although this works for the first two links only). And I like the way they show me my personal profile.

And also just noticed the “Change background image” link, was this there before? TwentyTen fails the WordPress Theme Unit Test? The WordPress team released their new default theme together with WordPress 3.0 which is supposed to be one of the best-written themes around, one that theme designers and developers should base their new themes upon.

Yes, the functionality is great, the look of it is good, but hey, the Theme Directory on WordPress.org doesn’t accept all incoming new themes, they make them pass the Theme Unit Test which is not that simple.

While working on a new theme of mine, I downloaded the test and ran TwentyTen against it and guess what, the Images Test failed (as illustrated in the screenshot above) in Chromium and Firefox under Ubuntu Linux, WordPress 3.0.4. So guess it’s not that good after all huh? ;)

12 Fun & Clever Examples of HTML5

12 Fun & Clever Examples of HTML5

I’m on the left, my friend Timothy is on the right and I...

I’m on the left, my friend Timothy is on the right and I have absolutely no idea who’s the girl in the middle ;)

Snippet: Nofollow for Tag Cloud in WordPress

Snippet: Nofollow for Tag Cloud in WordPress

Top 20 Popular Stories: January 2011

This is a tryout of a new series of popular posts. You know when you build applications (especially web applications) you often leave a copyright notice on every page saying “Copyright 2010, All Rights Reserved” or whatever? Right, but what developers tend to forget is that time passes by and that they have to go back and change 2010 to 2011 in January — so we often browse websites, especially in January and February that have last year’s copyrights.
